As with other breeds, poodles can be predisposed to certain health issues. Many of them are genetic, but some of them can be avoided by consciously making wise lifestyle choices.
Here are some of the health issues that you should be wary about as a poodle owner:
- Addison’s Disease
Also known as hypoadrenocorticism, Addison’s disease occurs when there is an insufficient production of adrenal hormones by the adrenal gland. The first signs of the disease include lethargy and gastrointestinal disturbances like vomiting. It can be detected via an ACTH response test, where administration of the hormone will normally stimulate the production of adrenal hormones. If this does not occur, then hypoadrenocorticism is present.
- Hip Dysplasia
Hip Dysplasia occurs when the hip joint is malformed and the head of the femur will not properly align with the cup of the hip socket. Diagnosis is generally done via x-ray, and the misalignment can range from mild to severe. In mild cases, proper diet and exercise will greatly help in ensuring your dog can still enjoy a full and active life. However, in more severe cases, surgical correction is your only alternative.
- Hypothyroidism
A malfunctioning thyroid is caused by an inadequate production of the thyroid hormone. Its symptoms include obesity, lethargy, excessive coarse coat texture and irregular heat cycles. Hypothyroidism can be detected via taking a blood sample, and it can be treated with regular medication.
- Epilepsy
Idiopathic epilepsy is very common among seizures. This is inherited and it can result in either mild or severe seizures. When dogs get seizures, they usually engage in unusual behaviour such as running frantically or hiding in the bathroom. Although seizures can be terrifying to watch, idiopathic epilepsy is not usually fatal. However, many other factors can cause seizures in dogs, such as metabolic disorders and tumors. The wisest thing to do when your dog starts having seizures is to get him checked by a vet thoroughly in order to properly determine the cause.
