The poodle is undoubtedly one of the most popular breeds in the world. But it’s not only its stylish looks that make the poodle such a well-loved pet. It is also an intelligent and devoted dog, which makes it so easy for many people around the world, including royalty, Hollywood celebrities and famous writers to develop lifelong bonds with them.
The list of famous people who have owned Poodles is quite an extensive one.
Royalty such as Prince Ruper of the Rhine and Lord Worcester of Beaufort have been extremely devoted to their poodles. It is also well-documented in popular media that John Steinbeck, author of ‘Mice and Men’, traveled around America with a Standard poodle named Charley. Other famous writers who owned Poodles include Charles Dickens, Victor Hugo, and James Thurber.
Hollywood also welcomed Poodles of all sizes with open arms. The number of celebrities who owned, still own, and loved Poodles is growing by the day. Women celebrities such as Betty White, Katharine Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Ellen Degeneres and Barbara Streisand have been known to love and spoil their poodles excessively. Even male celebrities such as Cary Grant and Robin Williams have also grown attached to their poodles.
Even Sir Winston Churchill owned a poodle named Rufus. In fact, when it got run over by a car and killed, a fan offered him one of her bulldogs. She was politely refused and told, “If Mr. Churchill has another dog it will be a Poodle again.”
The list of popular figures that have welcomed poodles into their homes and lives only goes to show that poodles have been well-loved for centuries and will be for many years to come. It comes as no surprise, though, as poodles are incredibly easy to love – what with their good looks, intelligence and pleasant disposition.
