Poodles have long been known as a “frou frou” breed, commonly seen accompanying socialites and fashionistas. People often forget that poodles have a number of qualities that make them companions in other social circles, as well, such as among hunters and fishermen. For those looking to give their dog a more “manly” appearance, suggested haircuts are discussed below.
Puppy Clip
The puppy clip is intended for show poodles under the age of 12 months, but is also common among pet owners, as well. The legs and body are lightly scissored into shape while the face, throat, base of tail, and paws are shaved. Although this clip requires frequent brushing, it is otherwise low maintenance while still retaining the look of a poodle.
Kennel Clip
The kennel clip is ideal for dogs that lead active lifestyles with their owners. The hair on the body is kept short (typically less than a ½ inch long) while the face, feet, and tail are completely shaved. The topknot and tail pompom are scissored, while the ears may be cut into any style. With little brushing required, this clip is as low-maintenance as they come. The Kennel clip is perfect in the summer months or for dogs that enjoy hiking and swimming.
German Trim
Another style that requires little maintenance, the German trim is popular among poodle owners who wish for their dog not to appear too “frou frou.” This style is often described as “clean” and “handsome.” In this trim, the ears are cleanly shaved and the tail is all one length, with no pompom. The smooth styling of ears and tail eliminate some of the “girly” features that poodle owners may not appreciate. The rest of the hair is kept long and scissored into a desirable shape.
Teddy Bear Clip
In the teddy bear clip, the hair covering the entire body is maintained the same length, including ears, tail, and feet. This clip is easiest for someone who does his or her own grooming. The coat can be trimmed as close or as long as desired. Many poodle owners prefer this clip, especially if wishing to make their dog not immediately recognizable as a poodle.
Freestyle Clip
Many poodle owners are also opting for their own stylings. For a more masculine look, the hair can first be clipped into a teddy bear style, with additional trimming to the top knot, muzzle, ears, and tail. For instance, some owners appreciate a bearded muzzle, which can give a dog more of a “manly” appearance, as opposed to the bald face of more traditional trims, such as the Continental clip. Eliminating the pompom at the tail is one of the most common modifications that men make. Part of the fun of having a poodle is that hair styles can be experimented with while knowing that it in 6 -8 weeks a new style can be attempted. Topknot mowhawks, muzzle moustaches, and even designs shaved into the hair are popular among men wishing to make a statement.
